I spent twenty-six years in academia. In 2018, I began to walk a potent path of spiritual awakening. Fireheart is what I do now - shamanic energy work, spiritual mentorship, ceremony and hand-crafted tools for remembrance.

I am Dr. Karen Fortuin - a shamanic healer and former research professor who spent 26 years in academia before Spirit asked me to walk a different path.
The first path
I earned my Master of Public Health (MPH) from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in 1995, and my Doctor of Science (ScD) from the same institution in 2003. I joined the faculty of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Colorado in 1998, and retired as an Associate Professor in 2024. Throughout those twenty-six years, I wrote grants and led large-scale behavioral research projects as well as teaching medical students.
I'm not a physician - my work was always in research and public health - but I spent my entire career inside the world of evidence and science alongside researchers and physicians. I enjoyed it and excelled in it. That path gave me rigor, discernment and a deep respect for what the body is asked to show.
